Chestnut Street District – a progressive downtown

Plainville native and Fort Hays State University Alumni, Chuck Comeau, created Liberty Group in 1999 and approached the City of Hays concerning the redevelopment of downtown. By 2000, the Downtown Hays Development Corporation (DHDC) was established which completed the vital private/public partnership consistent with downtown restoration projects. Within two years, the physical restoration by Liberty Group began and to date has grown to encompass over 20 buildings in downtown Hays.

Liberty Group’s renovations pay homage to the original buildings’ architecture, but in a chic, updated urban style that draws inspiration from rural icons. The renovations are designed by Comeau and are in accordance with the Kansas Historical Society. Comeau is nationally renowned for his design sensibilities. He has been named by national publications one of the top 100 influential designers in the country as well as a “New Tastemaker – one of fifty individuals for the future of the design industry.”

With a population of 20,500, Hays is a university community and the regional hub for retail, education, health care, entertainment and recreation to over 400,000 northwest Kansas residents, making the county the second largest retail pull factor in the state.
